Bruny Island

A ferry runs to this island from Kettering for $30 return ticket for 2 ppl and the car. Kettering is about  45 minutes from Hobart. Bruny is quite a big island, with a length of 100kms+ from north to south. The ferry ride is about 15 minutes and many people would join the 3 hour boat cruise to look at its famous sea cliffs.

First stop on the island, we went to the Cheese Farm. They provide cheese tasting and claiming themselves as artisan cheese makers. Well, we didn’t really like the odd cheese smell, especially the mixture of goat and cow cheese >.< Too strong of taste for US! 

Next, we come to the Neck, which is a narrow land connecting the North Bruny Is and the south. At the Neck, there are wooden ladder steps to climb up and see the views. After sunset, you can even view the tiny fairy penguins from the beach. They are so cute! The youngs keeps making noises at their burrows, waiting for their parent to come back and feed them. We can just feel the number of penguins here, making such noises. Some even cross the road to the other side. Penguin is by far the most difficult animals to look for. Even though you know where they were, you can’t see them clearly as you can’t use direct light towards them. Unless of course, go to the wildlife park.

Bruny Island is all about PEnguInS for US. Because the next morning, before dawn, we are already by this beach side. Waiting for the penguins to turn up at 5am. At this time of the year, the first civil twilight is around 6am. Around 5.40am, we heard some noise in the bush. Then a group of three came out, and move quickly towards the beach! Oh how cute.. even in the darkness..! Then another five penguins came out. They will gather behind the bush, waiting for a number of 'friends' before going to the sea together so that they are less vulnerable.

At Adventure Bay, we took the Fluted Cape Walk*****. About 2.5 hours of hiking, first along the beach then up the forest, and final descend along the cliffs. It is quite exhaustive but worth it! We believe we have seen about 30% of what people pay at $110 for the boat cruise. Hehe!

 Finally able to capture this unique Australian bird on camera! The Laughing Kookaburra! 

So called name because it will laugh very loudly each time it caught a snake or lizard!

We stayed at Captain Cook Caravan Park, $28 for unpowered site. For hot shower, we need to put in $1 coin in the shower box to get 5 min of hot water due to the island's water restriction.

The wildlife in Bruny Is is abundant! Many birds and 'seafood' swimming around. We tried to do some fishing at the Adventure Bay jetty, and was able to catch a squid after sunset! A big sting ray was swimming around the jetty too!
